Field Trip to UF Swine Facility

Our November meeting found us at the UF Swine Facility. It was loads of fun. Mr. Larry Eubanks and Dr. Chad Carr, both of the UF Animal Science department, led the tour and answered questions. The pictures didn't turn out great - it was dusty and almost dusk.

More Worms

Dr. Billy Crow was our guest speaker. He's a nematologist at UF and was a great speaker. We built a bin for the worms and then added compost and the worms.

Worms, worms, and more worms

We had a great meeting with about 15 Cloverbuds and 4-H members and several tag along members. We read "Oh Say Can You Seed" by Dr. Seuss and did an edible dirt activity. It was really fun, but really sweet.

Earthworms and Sweet Potatoes

With the 4-Hers (over 8), we're trying to give them a little more context to our meetings so that they can help teach the Cloverbuds. We've been meeting with them separately. At this meeting, Abby and Joy's dad, Dr. Billy Crow, taught about earthworms. We then did a mini-science project with growing sweet potatoes in jars.

Officer Meeting

First officer meeting of the year. Abby and Joy decided on some guidelines on how the meeting would run and learned about being officers.

Happy Holidays!

I'm a little behind in my posting, but we've had several very fun meetings in the last couple of months. The club is off to a great start!

Butterfly Festival at FLMNH this weekend

The Butterfly Festival is this weekend at the Florida Museum of Natural History. It looks like a lot of fun and would provide some great learning activities and discussion points for our kids.

Registration forms

If you haven't done so already, please turn in your registrations forms to Ms. Emily! We need to get these turned in to the 4-H office as soon as possible. If you need another copy, please contact Emily.

Next meeting - Oct. 9 for the 8 and up kids

Billy Crow, one of our dads and a UF nematology professor, will be teaching an advanced vermiculture session on Oct. 9 at the Eubanks house. Oct. 16 will be our meeting for everyone. He'll be teaching again, but the older kids will get to help this time.

Vermiculture, or growing worms, will help us with out gardening and plant unit this fall. Get ready for some squiggly, wiggly worms!

September 4-H Meeting

Our first meeting of the year was a blast! I was impressed with the turnout and how attentive the kids were. Thanks to Tom Wichman for being our guest speaker this time and teaching about container gardens.

Tom is talking about what plants need here.

The kids with their finished projects! Now they just have to remember to water them at home.

4-H Pledge

Practice this whenever you can. We'll say this at each of our meetings with the United States pledge.

I pledge

my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service, and
my health to better living.

For my club, my community, my country and my world.

Meeting on Tuesday, September 18

We had a great first meeting with two of our older members this last Tuesday. They've stepped up to take leadership roles of president and secretary. Great job, girls!

Our first official meeting is Tuesday at the Crows house. We're looking forward to having everyone. We have some fun activities planned including a game, a gardening activity, and snacks. Mr. Tom Wichman will be our guest speaker and will be talking to us about container gardening.

If you can, please bring all of your forms filled out. That would really help us get everything in on time.

Invite your friends! We'd love to have them. Looking forward to seeing everyone Tuesday!
